Disability Pride Month: When Communities Make Room for Every Talent
July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate disability identity, recognize the contributions of people with disabilities, and reflect on the progress made toward a more inclusive world. This year’s theme, “The World Works Better With Us,” is a powerful reminder that when people with disabilities are included, valued, and empowered, our communities become stronger, more innovative, and more connected.
At TNC Community, we see this truth every day.
For more than 77 years, TNC Community has championed equity and inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, supporting people in living lives filled with dignity, belonging, and joy. Whether through residential services, Community Connections, or workforce development initiatives, our mission is rooted in a simple belief: every person deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams, share their talents, and make meaningful contributions to their community.
What Is Disability Pride?
Disability Pride is about recognizing disability as a natural and valuable part of human diversity. It challenges the idea that disabilities should be hidden or overcome before someone can be accepted, respected, or included.
For some individuals, Disability Pride means celebrating identity and community. For others, it means rejecting shame and advocating for equal access, accommodations, and opportunities. While every experience is different, Disability Pride is ultimately about belonging and the recognition that people with disabilities have always been—and will always be—an important part of our communities.
The theme “The World Works Better With Us” highlights something many people don’t realize: some of society’s most widely used innovations originated from disability advocacy and accessible design. Features like curb cuts, closed captioning, audiobooks, and voice-to-text technology were created to improve accessibility, yet today they benefit millions of people of all abilities.
Inclusion and accessibility doesn’t just help people with disabilities—they make the world better for everyone.
Disability Pride in Action: Ty’eisha’s Story
At TNC Community, Disability Pride comes to life through the individuals we support and the goals they pursue every day.
For Ty’eisha, that goal was sharing her artwork with the world.
Ty’eisha has always dreamed of being an artist. Like many people, taking the first step toward sharing a personal passion with others can feel daunting. With support, encouragement, and determination, she found the confidence to submit and present her work at The Whole Person Art Expo.
A Dream Shared with the Community
The experience exceeded expectations.
Not only did Ty’eisha proudly showcase her artwork, but she was also one of just 17 artists whose work sold during a bidding war.
What made the experience so meaningful wasn’t simply the sale—it was the opportunity to express herself, connect with others, and see her talent recognized and celebrated.
Participating in the expo helped build Ty’eisha’s confidence, encouraged self-expression, and created a deeper connection to her community. Her story is a powerful reminder that when barriers are removed and opportunities are available, individuals with disabilities can share gifts and talents that enrich the lives of everyone around them.

The World Works Better With Us
This year’s Disability Pride Month theme invites all of us to think differently about disability and inclusion.
People with disabilities are artists, employees, neighbors, volunteers, advocates, friends, and leaders. They contribute unique perspectives, talents, creativity, and resilience that strengthen our entire community.
We see this every day through:
- Individuals building independence through Community Connections
- Individuals creating homes filled with friendship and belonging
- Employees gaining confidence and skills through inclusive employment opportunities
- Self-advocates sharing their voices and shaping their futures
When communities invest in accessibility and inclusion, more people have the opportunity to participate fully, and everyone benefits.
Celebrating Disability Pride Month at TNC Community
Disability Pride Month is both a celebration and a call to action.
It is a time to celebrate accomplishments like Ty’eisha’s, recognize the talents and contributions of people with disabilities, and continue working toward a future where inclusion is the expectation, not the exception.
As TNC Community expands workforce development programs and launches our new Training Academy, we remain committed to creating even more opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to learn, grow, work, and belong.
Because the world truly works better when everyone has a seat at the table.
