Autism Acceptance Month
Celebrating Ability, Opportunity, and Inclusion
April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to move beyond awareness and into something deeper—understanding, belonging, and opportunity. At TNC Community, acceptance is not a slogan or a moment on the calendar. It is a daily commitment to ensuring individuals with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities are supported, valued, and empowered to live full, meaningful lives.
For more than 77 years, TNC Community has walked alongside individuals and families, creating pathways to independence through residential services, community connections, and inclusive employment opportunities. This month, we celebrate the individuals we serve, not for fitting into the world as it is, but for shaping it into something more inclusive, compassionate, and joyful
What Autism Acceptance Truly Means
Autism Acceptance Month challenges us to see individuals with autism not through a lens of limitation, but through one of possibility. Acceptance means recognizing unique strengths, honoring individual needs, and removing barriers that prevent people from fully participating in their communities.
At TNC Community, acceptance comes to life through person-centered services that prioritize dignity, choice, and connection. It means listening closely, adapting intentionally, and believing wholeheartedly in each person’s potential
Acceptance is about changing communities so everyone belongs.

Community Connections
Through Community Connections, individuals are encouraged to participate fully in the world around them. From social outings and volunteering to recreation and skill-building experiences, these opportunities foster friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Howdy Homemade Ice Cream
One of the most visible examples of this commitment is Howdy Homemade Ice Cream in Lee’s Summit, MO—TNC Community’s social enterprise dedicated to creating meaningful jobs for individuals with disabilities. Heroes gain valuable job skills, earn equitable wages, and build confidence in a workplace that celebrates who they are.
A Story of Acceptance in Action
“I don’t have to pretend to be somebody I’m not.”
“I feel more confident here. I didn’t have to try to hide that I have autism when I applied to be a Hero. I get to work with people like me. I feel more confident here, definitely.” — Lilly

Why Celebrating Autism Acceptance Matters
Autism Acceptance Month reminds us that inclusion doesn’t happen automatically. It happens when communities invest in accessible housing, supportive services, meaningful employment, and genuine relationships.
When individuals with autism are supported with the right resources and encouragement, they pursue goals, share talents, and contribute in ways that enrich everyone.
At TNC Community, we are proud to be a premier service provider for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities—and even prouder of the individuals whose lives and stories inspire our mission every day
How You Can Support Autism Acceptance This Month
There are many ways to stand with individuals with autism and support the mission of TNC Community:
