Howdy Homemade Celebrates 1-year of Inclusive Employment

A Year of Scoops, Smiles, and Meaningful Employment

One year ago, Howdy Homemade opened its doors in Lee’s Summit with a mission that goes far beyond serving ice cream. As a social enterprise of TNC Community, Howdy Homemade was created to provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities while building a more connected, inclusive community.

Today, as the shop celebrates its first birthday, there is so much to be proud of—and even more to look forward to.

By the Numbers: A Sweet First Year

In its first year, Howdy Homemade Lee’s Summit has made an incredible impact:

  • 41,420 scoops of ice cream served
  • 17,698 guests welcomed
  • 15 Heroes employed
  • 23 community events catered
  • 127 free pints shared with Fan Club members
  • $1,921.96 raised through “Round Up for Scoops” in support of TNC Community
  • “Chocolate As All Get Out” named best-selling flavor

Behind each number is something even more meaningful—opportunity, confidence, and connection.

The Heart of the Mission: Howdy Homemade Heroes

Rayla’s Story: Building Confidence Through Opportunity

At the center of Howdy Homemade are its Heroes—team members whose talents, personalities, and dedication make the shop such a special place.

Rayla is one of those Heroes.

Recently hired through TNC Community’s Employment Services, Rayla represents the next chapter of growth for both Howdy Homemade and TNC Community’s expanding workforce development for individuals with disabilities. With support, training, and individualized coaching, Rayla has stepped into her role with enthusiasm and determination.

Working at Howdy Homemade isn’t just about serving ice cream—it’s about gaining confidence, developing new skills, and building meaningful connections with coworkers and customers. For Rayla, employment is opening doors to greater independence and a stronger sense of belonging in her community.

Her story is a powerful reminder that when individuals are given the right support and opportunity, they can truly thrive.

Expanding Impact Through Employment Services

Rayla’s success is part of a larger momentum at TNC Community.

As the organization continues to grow its Employment Services program, more individuals with IDD are finding meaningful employment in inclusive workplaces across the Kansas City area. Recent placements include roles at Gates BBQ and Burger King, where individuals are contributing their strengths while gaining valuable experience.

These opportunities don’t just change individual lives—they strengthen the entire community.
